Martin Greenwood Memorial Hilly TT

Martin Greenwood Memorial Hilly TT – Event to be held as a 10 mile TT on L101 in 2019 – Trophy for Fastest PETTS rider

Date: 25 June 2019, 7pm

HQ: Winmarleigh Village Hall

“Martin Greenwood, a talented young rider, and member of Preston Wheelers Cycling Club, was killed on his way home on his bike from a gym session with his club, when a car veered round a bend on Croston Road, Leyland, on the wrong side, hitting Martin head on. He was 17 years old.

This happened on October 11th 1975, and although it was the 40th anniversary on 2015, a memorial event for Martin is still held every year. Initially, it was a Hill Climb, with just the close clubs which he was known to. But now it is a Time Trial starting and finishing in Longridge, taking in a hilly course round Chaigley. It is 17 miles in total. The memorial Trophy continues to have the Winner’s names recorded each year, some appearing more than once. Different venues have been used for the event, and friends and various club members have come to pay their respects to Martin’s parents, Arthur and Jean. The Trophy is awarded annually and a replica to keep is presented each year.

Martin’s achievements as a racing cyclist were prolific, he won the Preston Wheelers Junior Road Race Championship on 2 consecutive years, Schoolboy Championship in 1972, Junior Time Trial Championship in 1973 and the club Junior Championship outright in 1974. The Wheelers have reason to be proud of his achievements. Martin also had a flair for creative ideas, including the drilling out of brake levers and other artistic designs.

It is sad to think that, had Martin not been robbed of his ambition to race abroad, his becoming a Professional Cyclist might have been realised. He won’t be forgotten.”

2019 Winner: Phil Jones (Garstang CC)
